Magazine Publishers Increasing Cover Prices to Fill Crater Caused By The Continued Collapse of Newsstand Sales

Magazine newsstand sales continue to collapse each year. This fact is what is fueling the sometimes jumbled effort by many publishers to pump up their digital offerings. However, revenue from print is still a big part for many of them. So to fill the crater that continues to expand as newsstand sales continue to collapse, some publishers are increasing the cover price of their magazines, according to MagNet, a wholesaler group that compiles data on magazine sales.
Sales have dropped yet again, off 6.1 percent during the second quarter of this year. That’s about the same as first quarter and fourth quarter 2015, which averaged a 6.3 percent decline. But MagNet noted something interesting. It says the average cover price per magazine sold has risen from $5.28 during the first half of last year to $5.55 during the first half of this year. That’s not a huge rise, yet when you’re talking about millions of copies, it makes a difference.
