With Media General Opting to Drive off Into The Sunset With Nexstar, Meredith Gets $60 Million to Walk Away And Move On
Remember when Media General and Meredith Corp announced their engagement and the future looked rosy? Meredith CEO Steve Lacey would lead the combined group that was to be known as Meredith Media General and the opportunities for growth looked endless. Then Nexstar came along and got between Meredith and Media General causing confusion and second thoughts. Media General started to fall for Nexstar while Meredith fought long and hard to hold on. Well, it is officially over between Meredith and Media General before it even started as Media General is now being acquired by Nexstar for over $4 billion and will form a new company to be known as Nexstar Media Group (doesn't that name sound better?). Naturally Meredith is devastated but a $60 million payout to move on will help dry those tears. Also, maybe Meredith will try some new moves on Time Inc which is begging to be acquired, depending on who you talk to.
