Jeff Bewkes to step down as Time Warner CEO, at least his contract says he can if he doesn’t get the Chairman title

Published: Tuesday, March 25, 2008

MEDIA WIRE DAILY
So Time Warner shareholders and perhaps some board members are pushing for the CEO and Chairman titles to be separate to avoid what they call conflict of interests. However Jeff Bewkes’s contract reportedly states that if he isn’t handed the Chairmanship, to go along with his CEO-ship, he can resign from the company. So if it the vote goes in favor of separating both titles come May 16 at the annual meeting, will Jeff Bewkes leave Time Warner? Not locking down the Chairman title to go with the CEO title may leave Jeff feeling as though he really isn’t calling the shots and may cause him to think about leaving. But he would be stupid to let a little thing like a title drive him to the exit. Where would he go? There are no top spots open at any other major media company so that’s out the door. However one can speculate that this was all designed by the board to get rid of Bewkes in favor of someone else, because he doesn’t know what the hell he is doing. But that’s going off the cliff a little bit. On that not, here is a late poll:

WILL/SHOULD JEFF BEWKES QUIT AS CEO IF HE ISN'T NAMED CHAIRMAN AS WELL
YES, HE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT HE'S DOING ANYWAY
NO, HE WOULD BE STUPID TO QUIT OVER THAT

Poll Result: David Pecker probably paid for sex, or is still paying for sex...

Published: Monday, March 17, 2008

MEDIA WIRE DAILY
One can say, it's why American Media Inc is always in the red, but fortunately for American Media CEO David Pecker, it’s not the case, at least we don't think so, but we wouldn't be surprised if it was. Following the whole Elliot Spitzer getting busted for buying time with high priced whores, we did a little poll to see which media figure you think is the most likely to have paid for, or is still paying for sex and a bunch of you overwhelmingly voted David Pecker most with 41% followed by Viacom/CBS grandpa Sumner Redstone with 18%. Former Time Warner CEO Dick Parsons, CBS CEO Les Moonves and Former Disney CEO Mike Eisner tied with 9% each. We would have included former Time Warner CEO Wayne Pace in the poll but we all know he is still on the whore prowl. Hell he is probably shacked up in a bordello somewhere right now. Anyway check the results:

So New York Governor Elliot Spitzer got busted for spending cash on high priced sluts and so goes the whole sex and politics thing. But it’s also the same in big business as you all know. Case in point, former Time Warner CFO Wayne Pace was also busted for spending big on high priced Manhattan sluts, and we all know it doesn't end there. With that said, a late poll. Which media exec is more likely to have paid for sex or is still paying for sex through deep rooted back channels?

Which one of these guys is more likely to have paid for, or is still paying for sex?

"The Writers Guild of America strike was like a great forest fire. "Fires fertilise the soil with new ash and clear the ground, often setting the stage for robust growth." - Jeff Zucker

BY SDH
NBC Universal CEO Jeff Zucker, like his fellow media execs, is happy that the long slog that was the WGA strike is now over and all energy is now trained on getting everything back to normal, or as close to it as possible. Jeff Zucker speaking last month in Las Vegas to the National Association of Television Program Executives (NATPE) played up the WGA strike as a positive, saying the strike could spark robust growth. But is Zucker, naive to suggest this or is he on the money? Is Zucker suggesting that, due to the 3 month long strike, writers are over flowing with content and fresh ideas? This is probably the case, but It will cost some networks millions to promote the return of hit shows that were put on hold during the strike.

Jeff Bewkes's game of wait and see with Time Inc, not a smart one, or so you say

Published: Tuesday, February 12, 2008

BY SDH
When Jeff Bewkes hosted his first earnings call as CEO of Time Warner many were anxious to hear his plans for the future of the company. Some of the things he mentioned were expected like continuing to revamp AOL from sleepy dial up to ad machine. But what no one really expected was his decision to keep the luggy Time Inc magazine business as is, with hopes of it becoming growth business via digitalization. We asked you, our readers if Jeff Bewkes was making a mistake by leaving Time Inc with its over 100 magazines in tact and 56% of you who participated said he is indeed making a mistake.

For Jeff Bewkes, it’s a damned if you do damned if you don't kinda situation

Published: Thursday, February 07, 2008

BY SDH
Just a little over a month on the job and Jeff Bewkes finally gave some hints as to what his immediate first plans are to set overweight Time Warner on a path to re-invention (if you will). As you know by now from all the coverage its been getting, the lanky lord of everything from CNN to HBO to Time Inc, said that his team is working to split off AOL's outdated dial up business with plans for a possible sale (to who?), he is also taking a long hard look at cable and will get back to investors on that one. But the shocker of that whole earnings report for us was the fact that Bewkes says that he is sticking it out with Time Inc, the publisher of magazines like Time and People. OK so maybe it wasn't too much of a shocker but we thought that like AOL and Time Warner cable, Time Inc would have been put on a lift for a serious look under the hood. Nope. Bewkes will decide what to do with the magazine business if and when it turns into a growth business with all the digitalization going on over there and all. So anyway on that note, today's poll:

IS JEFF BEWKES MAKING A MISTAKE BY LEAVING TIME INC INTACT?
YES, THE COMPANY HIT A GLASS ROOF YEARS AGO
NO, IT CAN BECOME A GROWTH BUSINESS
JEFF BEWKES IS AN IDIOT

Guardian Media Group survey says Google and James Murdoch are the media sensations to watch in 2008. We would have went with Britney Spears

Published: Wednesday, January 30, 2008

-SDH
Guardian Media Group, owner of the MediaGuardian.co.uk website surveyed media executives and consultants on who/what they think will be the media industry's star in 2008 and the results came back with James "Jimmy" Murdoch and Google's Android at the top as the media sensations to watch in 2008. Now, the results would have been different if the kids at Guardian Media Group got creative with the choices. If Britney Spears was included in the survey she would've probably came out on top solo. Anyway, other names/companies thrown into the mix included Facebook, LinkedIn, TechCrunch among others. In some weird way, Rupert Murdoch wins again doesn't he!

Published: Wednesday, January 02, 2008

In a poll posted on this site, we asked you our readers what you thought was the biggest media story of 2007 and un-surprisingly 47% of you said that the Dow Jones acquisition was the big story of 2007. In second place, there was a tie between the changing of the guards at Time Warner and the Writers strike with 21% each. Following behind that was another tie between the Dreamworks/Viacom beef and flood of magazine re-designs at 5%. What will be the biggest media business story of 2008? Jeff Bewkes resigns, Sumner Redstone dies, Germany's Bertelsmann hires a black senior executive? Wait are there even black people in Germany? Anyway, hopefully we will be around to say our piece on whatever the biggest story is.

Let’s say TimeWarner decides to sell off all of AOL, according to estimates a successful sale of the online giant, could fetch in the neighborhood of $18 billion. What would TimeWarner do with this chunk of cash? Well there have been suggestions that CEO Jeff Bewkes should kick the tires on NBC Universal if and when General Electric decides to sell it after the 2008 Olympics, possibly creating a new media giant called Warner-Universal. But how would a Warner-Universal look? Well for starters a merger would result in a major sell off of redundant units, not to mention a massive layoff. NBC Universal is home to MSNBC which competes with TimeWarner's CNN. Would the two be merged, or would MSNBC be put on the block in favor of CNN. How about the movie studios? Would a Warner-Universal hold on to two major movie studios by merging them to create Warner-Universal Studios, or would one be sold off? More importantly, how would senior management look? Clearly TimeWarner being the buyer would have Jeff Bewkes at the helm, but would NBC Universal’s little big man Jeff Zucker be out of a job, or would Bewkes name him his number two? We think Zucker would be toast. But that’s just us. Today's poll:
