Prince Harry's stint in the war zone ruined by the media and Prince Harry

Published: Monday, March 03, 2008

BY SDH
When word "leaked" that Prince Harry was in Afghanistan "On the front lines", the media went into a frenzy all running the same looped video of the lanky red headed son of Princes Diana sitting behind high caliber gun and another with him patrolling a street in an Afghan town. The only thing is that, the streets Harry and his fellow British soldiers were patrolling were completely empty not even wind in sight. It’s almost as if you can imagine the whole seen behind the camera, a producer and a director who you are waiting to hear say the words “cut” and “great job Harry”. The footage of him the big caliber gatlin gun shooting with a smile on his face and sometimes stopping to chat with his whoever was in the trench with him, was described by the media as the "Prince shooting at enemy positions". What's really sad is that the American media more than any other is eating this clear cut propaganda designed by the British in an effort to normalize the prince in the eyes of his fellow soldiers and the world. Harry was probably nowhere near any real danger while in Afghanistan. We doubt the prince even got a glimpse of a Taliban. So why is the American media eating up this hot dish of nothing? Well because the American media is built on sensationalism and will run with anything that will pull in an audience. They ran headlines like "The Hero Prince Comes Home" and ran the staged photos along with their overzealous headlines. But Harry wanting to stay clear of media made labels is rejecting the "Hero" and rightfully so. We have to say though our favorite footage was Harry calling in a fake air strike.

Gawker's new managing editor, Gawker Media boss Nick Denton, at least for now

Published: Monday, December 17, 2007

It's not the first time Gawker Media owner Nick Denton has had to step up and take on an active roll on one of his blogs. He was most recently editor of his silicon valley gossip title Valleywag.com. Now Mr. Denton will take on the roll of managing editor of his flagship blog Gawker.com just until they find that someone to come in and run the website. Gawker over the years have been slowly moving from media gossip blog to traditional news site which apparently was not by mistake.

Maggie Shnayerson, the associate editor of Gawker.com, said the transition from gossip blog to news-oriented site was a natural one. “If you own a business in an industry that changes every minute, you always have to look at what you’re doing,” she said.

How long until they change their tag line from: "Gawker, daily Manhattan media news and gossip. Reporting live from the center of the universe" to something like "Gawker, daily news. Reporting live from the center of the universe"

Off Beat: Continuing our obsession with the Germans this morning, it turns out they have a sick sense of humor just like us Americans

**An Off Beat post is something we go through sporadically where we read something that we have to comment on because of the level of stupidity or we just feel like sharing our thoughts about it. It’s usually never associated with what we usually cover but never the less it has some tie in with the media industry, most of the time.

Trespassing over at Nerve.com's Scanner Blog, we came asscross a post about a German ad for a Job fair. The guys at Scanner attempted to explain what they think the ad means, but couldn't quite put their fingers on it. Us on the other hand, we clearly know what it means. Its how most of us feel about our bosses!

We're certainly not the first blog to do this comparison at least we don't think so. But with the lack of worthy media news we like to write about, we found that we had some time on our hand. We've always wondered who in the world does our friend in our head Liz Spiers remind us of and we couldn't quite put our fingers on it, until we came across a photo of actress Rachel Dratch, and then it kicked us in the ass. Liz Spiers and Rachel Dratch could pass for sisters, maybe even twin sisters! Don't you think so?

Off Beat: The Annexation of Mexico?

Author Erik Rush's new book Annexing Mexico : Solving the border problem through annexation and assimilation.” may be far fetched but he does raise some serious points. But not serious enough for America to move towards taking over Mexico. Can you imagine how scared white people would be to know that the Mexican cutting their lawn now has all the rights they do?

The border between the United States and Mexico isn’t just a boundary between nations; it’s a chasm that separates a wealthy global superpower from a poverty-stricken Third World Country. To millions of Mexicans desperate for a better life, it’s a finish line-- to cross it undetected means to seek prosperity in America . But the U.S. spends billons of dollars each year on illegal aliens, making immigration one of today’s most contentious issues in American politics. While the angry debate rages over how to protect our border, perhaps the most realistic question is, why not extend the border and annex Mexico ?

CONTINUED....

The border is 2,000 miles long, most of it in treacherous terrain that is difficult and costly to protect. In 2006, the U.S. spent $12 billion on border enforcement. Yet hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants sneak through every year. “We’re like a dog chasing its tail,” says political columnist and author Erik Rush. “We spend billions of dollars each year to keep immigrants out, then billions more on their education and healthcare once they get here anyway. We’d be smarter to spend those billions to improve and annex Mexico . We would solve the immigration problem and reap a host of other benefits.”

Balancing the costs and benefits of a peaceful annexation of Mexico is a monumental project. Yet Rush has thoughtfully researched and constructed a plan which he outlines in his provocative new book, “Annexing Mexico : Solving the border problem through annexation and assimilation.” While the book is certain to stir up fiery debates, Rush points to polls that show 40% of Mexicans would like to live in America and 10% of Mexico’s population is already here. So why not bring America to them. Could it work?

“Mexicans are generally a hard-working, family-oriented population,” says Rush. “Most Americans can appreciate those traits. The problem now is U.S. taxpayers are rightfully angry about carrying someone else’s load. The animosity will dissipate when the burden is shared equally by annexing Mexico and improving conditions there.”

Rush is very persuasive and logical when he demonstrates how both nations would benefit if Mexico becomes part of the United States . “The first step is conceding that patrolling the border does not and will not work,” says Rush. “We have terrorists sneaking through our back door-- and they’re not looking for jobs. After annexation, we’d be in a better position to protect ourselves from terrorist infiltration by heavily fortifying Mexico ’s narrow southern tip which is much easier to defend.”

Rush carefully dissects the obstacles of taking over Mexico, including bringing the infrastructure up to U.S. standards, shaking out the corruption in Mexico’s government, increasing minimum wage and improving healthcare. “We spend $1.4 billion a year on emergency room costs for illegal immigrants,” says Rush. “Diseases we once eradicated in the U.S. are re-emerging in frightening numbers. If we immunize, bring healthcare up to date and educate the Mexican population about the spread of communicable diseases everybody’s better off.”

Aside from the quality of life benefits, “Annexing Mexico” points out what many will see as the piece de resistance, the overwhelming crucial benefit to Rush’s proposal: North America could finally achieve energy independence. “ Mexico has huge oil reserves that could eliminate our reliance on OPEC,” says Rush. “The state run oil business in Mexico operates at a loss right now, which is testament to the corruption in the Mexican government. There’s no excuse for this—it’s time for a dramatic change.”

While Rush believes greed and fear are hurdles that must be overcome, “Annexing Mexico” explains how extending the border could improve the lives of millions of Americans for generations to come. “Our population is growing so rapidly in the U.S. ,” says Rush. “We need some relief. Mexico desperately needs relief from the poverty afflicting more than half of its citizens. It’s ludicrous for a line in the sand drawn more than a century ago to divide ‘the haves’ from ‘the have nots’ when a peaceful union can benefit everyone involved.”

Just a quick word in. Rupert Murdoch can indirectly endorse his choice for the Rupublican nomination for President, but no matter what anyone says, this morning's New York Post cover shot is exactly why Rudolph Guiliani will never be President. Our friends in our heads at Gawker also pointed out some things we're trying so hard not to picture in our minds.

The Post ruined all our breakfasts with their cover this morning (seriously: "Judi gushes as Rudi rushes in"?? Ewwwww!!!) Because we're very considerate, we waited until almost lunchtime to bring you our analysis of the article inside, which features excerpts from the Judi Guiliani interview that will appear in March's Harper's Bazaar, as well as the scintillating non-news that Rudy has filed some important papers that bring him one step closer to officially declaring his presidential candidacy.

So this new thing called Hi Def has porn stars flocking to fix it doctors in droves because the new Hi-Def format being used on DVD porn releases and the many Hi-Def televisions in households reveal too much, like the fact that well.......none of the females in porn are as perfect as they look on regular DVD's and televisions. On top of that, the following comment further solidifies the fact that blonds are indeed dumb.

Stormy Daniels says she isn’t sure “why anyone would want to see their porn” in high definition because it makes the picture so crisp and clear.

Hey Stormy, that's the whole idea!

OFF BEAT: We can't believe we're doing this, but Memo Pad analyzes Perez Hilton's daily traffic

Published: Monday, January 08, 2007

Celeb blogger Mario Lavandeira, aka Perez Hilton is not only known for his amateur art work on celeb photos and hosting parties, he is also known for talking about his website's traffic. He says that his site gets more visitors (3.97 million) in a day than print celebrity rags has readers in a week. However Memo Pad attempts to drill holes into that claim.

Well, it depends on how you define "readers." The statement is true only if one were to count them by paid circulation (and assume that the nearly 4 million high is typical — or even accurate). People's paid circulation adds up to 3.8 million, but that's hardly an indication of the magazine's overall readership. MRI numbers are a more common, if relatively unscientific, method of counting how many people actually read a magazine, since its polls count those who say they saw an issue, not just subscribers or newsstand buyers.

Even if perezhilton.com were to receive 4 million hits a day, it still wouldn't dent People's most recent MRI figure of 41.5 million. (Star's MRI readership is 10.5 million, while Us Weekly is at just over 11 million, spokeswomen for the magazines said).
