No one should be surprised by this announcement coming over the wires on of all days Super Bowl Sunday. What did GE and/or NBC think this would go un-noticed because we're stuffing our faces with food and downing six packs? Anyway, as expected, GE and NBC Universal brass will announce that Jeff Zucker, yeah the man nobody wants to work for will be the next CEO of media giant NBC Universal. We do anticipate more exits as this is now clearly reality but we don't know who. Maybe some lower rankers who we've never heard of but we do expect some more departures. It has been rumored for months that Bob Wright will step off and leave the company in the hands of Zucker a long time favorite of the boss of all bosses GE CEO Jeff Immelt. This is one of those fairytale corporate stories. Wonder how Jeff wills set up his version of NBC Uni? OK OK, we will wait until we get to that bridge. Who said the newspaper industry was in the toilet? if it is then the folks at Courtside Acquisition Corp are idiots for dropping $165 Million on the deal. But you know what? We doubt it. Viacom plans to pay $84.8 million to former Chief Executive Officer Tom Freston, ousted by Chairman Sumner Redstone last month after less than a year in the top job. Redstone, 83, removed Freston after he failed to boost the company's stock price, which fell 10 percent between Viacom's split from CBS Corp. at the start of the year and Sept. 5, when Freston was replaced. Not willing or even able to shell out the cash that Youtube.com would demand to sell out, NBC Universal has taken the stupid route and will directly compete with he powerful video site. NBC announced today that it has launched National Broadband Company (NBBC). The venture, which was originally announced in April, will also include video clips from third parties such as College Sports TV, The History Channel and others.Based loosely on the model of the hugely popular YouTube site, members of the venture will be able to add video to the system and also select which clips to play on their own site. MSNBC's Dan Abrams doing what cable execs do

Newly minted cable news exec Dan Abrams is getting a hang of things at MSNBC. Abrams has tapped former NY1 anchor Davidson Goldin to be MSNBC's editorial director. The two met in 1999 when Goldin was a producer at "Dateline NBC" and Abrams was the show's legal analyst. One of Goldin's first tasks will be to help implement Abrams' top priority: "increasing the emphasis on breaking news." We know one way to improve the whole breaking news thing at MSNBC. When fresh news comes in, the screen should go blank with the words "Breaking News" in big bold read letters, then cut to the newsroom for the story. Les and company announced their fall line up which isn't that exciting looking but then again we would have to watch first right. Big media continues to buy their way onto the new media train

Old big media companies are clearly in a buying frenzy to stay fresh and current so that the millions of teens who have been sucked away by new media companies will consider them cool. Newscorp didn't have a chance against a company like Myspace if they were to launch a new social networking site. So what did they do? They dropped major cash to buy them out and is now the only big media company firmly planted in this new online craze. But online social networking isn't the only new media source attracting big media companies. Tom Freston, arguably the coolest media CEO in the industry in part due to his MTV days, is buying into the online games and entertainment source as well. Freston of course with the blessing of Viacom grand daddy Sumner Redstone shelled out $102 Million to swallow Xfire an online gaming company. This acquisition will give Freston's MTV group yet another vehicle to spread it's very addictive programming and create even more programming for home and mobile media devices. But Viacom isn't the only media company going by the “if you can't beat them buy them” policy. Time Warner late last year took a chunk of online mobile media company Glu Mobile, a privately held maker of games for cell phones. The company’s Turner Broadcasting also launched GameTap, an online subscription service that features classic arcade and console games like Pac-Man and Sonic the Hedgehog, last year. More....

Never one to be left out in the cold of all the major media shuffles going down, Newscorp ruler Rupert Murdoch says that his company will launch a new network to air programming on television stations left without a network after the creation of Time Warner Inc.'s and CBS Corp.'s CW channel.
