Media Gumbo: Jim Cramer staying on the Street.com and only on the Street.com, Harvey Weinstein feels stiffed by Jeff Zucker, hates his guts and more…

Published: Wednesday, April 09, 2008

If the war between NBC Universal and the Weinstein Company doesn’t give a major boost to the new season of “Project Runway” we don’t know what will. In an article in Today’s New York Post, Harvey Weinstein is painted as money hungry back stabber, who is taking the show from NBC Universal’s Bravo cable network and handing it to the Lifetime simply because Lifetime is offering more money. Jeff Zucker is painted as a low baller who wants to keep the show for the current rate even though the show is making NBC Universal boat loads of money. This seems to be getting uglier and uglier and there is only one person who may come out on top smiling and that’s Lifetime Entertainment Prexy Andrea Wong. If she does end up with the show, by the time the show airs, everyone will know Lifetime is the new home of “Project Runway”. She will probably only need to use half of her marketing budget. Come on, you can’t buy this publicity!

Big mouth Jim Cramer, the cofounder of popular financial website Thestreet.com and host of CNBC’s “Mad Money” has renewed his contract with Thestreet.com and will get $1.3 million in his first year. However Cramer won’t be able to write for any competing websites which we don’t know why he would even want to in the first place.

Disney is going heavy on animation and already has some top level celebs on board to voice some characters. The company pulled the curtains up on its animation slate via a splashy 3 hour presentation and it looks like Bob Iger is planning to milk this thing. The slate, while not entirely a surprise to Disney followers, is certainly ambitious. Over the next five years, Disney's offerings will include a quartet of straight-to-DVD animated features starring Tinker Bell and her friends; the company's first hand-drawn musical in nearly two decades, "The Princess and the Frog"; a 3-D retelling of "Rapunzel"; and much-anticipated additional installments to the "Cars" and "Toy Story" franchises.

Even Disney’s Bob Iger believed CBS was really getting into bed with CNN probably still does, pressures ABCnews.comers to be all they can be

Published: Tuesday, April 08, 2008

With the web still abuzz about a possible CBS News, CNN join up, Disney CEO and Wall Street darling Bob Iger talks about why he had to pass on an ABC News, CNN join up. He says that CNN wanted an actual joint venture when all he was looking for was a news gathering agreement. The way it sounds is as if CNN wouldn’t budge on their stance at all. Iger does admit that the lack of a cable news partner puts ABC News at a disadvantage but, he isn’t looking to change that by acquiring one. Could these reasons be the same reasons why CBS News is now saying they weren’t in talks with CNN? Was CNN trying to muscle them into a joint venture as well?

Big Media Aggregated: Disney and News Corp goes shopping

By SDH
Disney Interactive Studios (DIS) the game arm of the media and entertainment giant has reportedly agreed to purchase Chinese company Gamestar. DIS general manager Graham Hopper feels good about the deal saying Gamestar will play a significant roll in DIS’s global growth plan. Wonder if Gamestar’s 90 staff members fit into that growth plan?

In other shopping news, News Corp’s Fox Networks, the company’s year-old online advertising network will announce today that it has bought control of European video ad network Utarget as part of a move to expand in Europe and Asia. Wendi Deng Murdoch, wife of Rupert is probably the mind behind this strategic swallowing. The Utarget deal comes after U.S.-based Fox Interactive Media (FIM) reorganized staff last week in anticipation of a possible revenue target shortfall. The reshuffling, long in the works, will also see the launch of FIM's long-anticipated U.S. online advertising network, called the FIM Audience Network.

The new New Line + Disney's boys + NBC Uni to unload stations + Newspapers continue to fight for online love

Published: Thursday, March 20, 2008

The New New Line: After announcing that he will fold the legendary New Line into the even more Legendary Warner Bros Studios because he can, Jeff Bewkes has a new man in charge now at a more smaller and nimble New Line as other top execs wait around to be fired. Toby Emmerich has been named Prexy and Chief Operating Officer.

Disney's Boys: Disney continues to corner the kiddie market with the announcement that they have entered a deal with teen sensations The Jonas Brothers to produce a new reality show based on their everyday life on tour and off. They sure know how to milk em don't they?

NBC Universal To Unload Some Stations: In an attempt to leave smaller markets behind, NBC Universal says that it is selling two of it's many stations WTVJ in Miami and WVIT in Hartford, Connecticut. No word on how much the company will pocket after a sale but we're sure it won't be chump change.

Newspapers continue their fight: In the never ending effort to remain relevant in these internet dominated times, a bunch of newspaper publishers are joining a new ad network called quadrantONE which helps newspaper publishers to capture money that advertisers are taking away from printed newspapers and moving online as they see more people spending their time on the Internet. These newspapers would sell their soul for ad dollars.

Don't call it a come back because Mike Eisner didn't go anywhere except to the bank

Published: Monday, March 03, 2008

“Just because Eisner is behind something, it doesn’t mean it is going to be a success.”
-Darren Aftahi, media analyst

BY SDH
Former Disney CEO turned Internet player Michael Eisner has been slowly putting together his new digital media empire piece by piece. Some would call it a comeback but the truth is Mike Eisner really didn't go anywhere. Right after he left Disney he was hosting his own show on CNBC called "Conversations with Michael Eisner" which we are happy is no longer airing because to be honest it sucked. When the show wrapped, Eisner turned his focus fully on what he saw was an opportunity to build a digital media empire via acquisitions and launches. With his acquisition of companies like Team Baby Entertainment, Topps, and the launch of a digital studio called Vuguru, Eisner has the ingredients to take on Hollywood where they are weak. But will he execute it well?

There are plenty of people in Hollywood who are rooting for him to fail. Jealousy over the success of “Prom Queen” — and Mr. Eisner’s occasional boasting about it — is one reason. He also retains his share of detractors from the Disney days. And while Internet types have overwhelmingly welcomed him, others remain skeptical.

Barron's : Disney is a well oiled machine

Published: Monday, February 25, 2008

BY SDH
Other media companies are looking to cut jobs, and chop up assets to create value and drive revenue. Others are dumping cash into deals to give the impression that they know how to digitize their content but sometimes the deal makes no sense. Others are just there, slugging along. But over at Disney, all joints are well lubricated and moving in unison thanks to the leadership of the Iger Administration. The business weekly Barron's owned by News Corp, says that Disney stands out for its management stability and financial discipline, two things some of its competitors lack. Barron's credits Bob Iger who was hand picked by Former Disney CEO Mike Eisner, for focusing on creating brands and deploying them across the company like the very annoying Hannah Montana, which if you have kids, invades your living room every weekend. Iger does seem to be focused on taking the organic route over dropping tons of cash to grow Disney and its brands like his competitors. However the organic route may be working well for Disney due to its content. Disney can monetize its content in ways that its competitors can't. For example the Hannah Montana brand. This went from cable, to music releases to more recently a stage show and a movie. All this in addition to a slew of branded merchandise allows Disney to build and expand from within. Iger doesn’t necessarily have to go looking outside for the next big thing. He can create it from within using Disney’s tween targeted content as a foundation. The Disney.com web portal is a perfect example of this. The properties Rupert Murdoch now owns through it's Down Jones acquisition seem to be big fans of Iger. It was Dow Jones' Marketwatch.com that named Iger 2006's CEO of The Year.

Disney's shining mouse

Published: Saturday, February 02, 2008

-SDH
We said it before and we'll say it again. Choosing Bob Iger as his successor was probably the only smart thing then outgoing Disney CEO Mike Eisner did in his last days at the company. Not only has Bob Iger injected new energy into the company, he put all Eisner's old beefs, mainly with Pixar to rest when he bought the company, and has consistently over delivered on revenue expectations. So how do you reward a CEO who constantly pleases? Well you sign him on for another round of what you hope will be five years to remember. Oh yeah did we mention that you also throw in an even fatter bonus and annual take home pay? Oh yeah!
The agreement, which extends through Jan. 31, 2013, modestly raises Mr. Iger’s compensation. He will receive a minimum bonus of $10 million for 2008, up from $7.25 million under the former contract.

Next week is Super Tuesday earnings report week

-SDH

Next week's entertainment line up is looking to be an exciting one. On Monday, News Corp will report its 2nd Quarter Fiscal 2008 results. On this call analysts will be waiting to hear about any plans in the works for the recently acquired Dow Jones as well why they decided to not free up the Wall Street Journal website, DUH! On Tuesday it will be Disney's turn to spill the beans about their First Quarter 2008 Financials. Disney is expected to announce earnings of 52 cents a share on $10 billion in revenue, not too bad Bobby! Can we get some acquisition news soon though? Saving the best for last, Jeff Bewkes will make his debut on Time Warner's earnings call as CEO on Wednesday. We have no doubts analysts are itching for this one. Some of the questions Bewkes and his team are expected to face will include, what are his plans for the oversized company, AOL, Time Inc etc... Oh yeah they are expected to report earnings of 29 cents a share on revenue of $12.6 billion. But we all know analysts will be more concerned about Bewkes's plans for the structure of the company.

Looking back at some of our look backs

Published: Friday, January 11, 2008

We don't like to stir up bad memories...OK who are we kidding? We live for this shit! Anyway, remember this Businessweek cover story featuring one of the main architects of the worst merger in the history of American business? Well many say this was the cover that led to the near death of Time Warner. Ok we said it!

We did a look back on the good old times of Jerry Levin when he was on top of the media world as CEO of pre-merger Time Warner. What is now called old media was all the rage back then, cable, print, you name it. Time Warner was king. Until.....well you know!

Some of you may not remember but there was a time not too long ago when Comcast CEO Brian Roberts thought he was actually going to buy Disney. He believed so much that he even did a "Bob Pittman" by doing a premature Businessweek cover. People will do anything to sell an idea won't they? Seriously, where would Disney be today if this deal did happen?

We bet Mike Eisner never drove himself to Disney HQ

Published: Monday, December 10, 2007

-YOSH

Disney CEO Bob Iger gets up every morning for work like the rest of working America, just a bit earlier. He writes notes to Disney's talent on jobs well done and he likes to rock out while driving home. This is all shocking to us because normal media moguls, don't know what it is to drive a car, they usually have one of their six assistants write notes for them and they probably would never admit to rocking out during their alone time. After reading about his daily routine in Fortune's "How I work" feature, we have a new found man crush on Bob Iger. Oh yeah did we mention that he watches classic Disney shorts on his iPhone! He was probably one of the first to get one. Bob Iger just may be the coolest media mogul.

Lose your driver. I drive myself to and from work. I love the privacy. It's one less person to talk with. I'm not antisocial. While I'm going home, I talk on the phone. Plus I love listening to music. Classic rock is always at the top of the list, from the Stones to the Beatles and Bob Dylan. I have a fondness for jazz, particularly for jazz singers, Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald all the way through the Sinatra era.

Disney's Robert Iger: VOD Sucks ass

Published: Friday, November 30, 2007

-YOSH

Thursday at the Sanford C. Bernstein Media Symposium, Disney CEO Bob Iger had some gripes to share with the audience. He is not a big fan of VOD, and is pushing for a more usable feature to be added to the service. Apparently he has the service at home based on the way he talks like someone with experience. He says that a Google like search feature needs to be added to the service if its going to survive.

"Type in "rat DVD" at Google and you'll easily find Ratatouille, he said, but that's far from the case for VOD"

He said he's had better luck at Time Warner Cable's Web site when seeking programming than with a TV remote control: "And if I want to find something VOD-related, oh my God!"

As it turns out News Corp's Peter Chernin may have set the blue print on how media CEOs may handle the strike going forward

Published: Thursday, November 29, 2007

-MARTY

Unlike the heads of their film divisions, media CEOs are more low key when it comes to the current writer's strike, negotiating under the radar to help get things back to business. CEOs like Bob Iger of Disney,Jeff Zucker of NBC Universal and Les "Love Boat" Moonves of CBS are all said to be three of few media biggies in on negotiations. It makes sense that those three would roll up their sleeves and dive in because a chunk of their business is Television and/or Film. However there are always the bad apples, and in this case its Rupert Murdoch's evil number two who claims to be a Democrat but is a closeted Republican Peter "Petie boy" Chernin. Petie Boy seems to be playing the "Dick Size" game as usual. In the early days of the strike Chernin actually hi-lited how the strike would save News Corp Money adding to the already outrageous comment made by Michael Eisner. But the fucked up part about all this is that he may get a few of his fellow media execs on his side of the line.

THE CUNTISMS OF MICHAEL EISNER: CALLS HOLLYWOOD WRITER'S STRIKE STUPID, SAYS STEVE JOBS IS THE REAL CULPRIT

Published: Wednesday, November 07, 2007

-BY SDH

Years after being booted from atop Disney, Michael Eisner still has a hard-on for Apple CEO Steve Jobs, saying that the current writer's strike should be directed towards Jobs and Apple because they are the ones making all the money from digital distribution. never mind that his former company is in bed with Steve Jobs and Jobs is huge Disney board member, Mike Eisner makes no fucking sense. He goes on to suggest that, the movie studios should have kept it quiet on what they are making from digital distribution and the writers wouldn't have went on strike claiming a piece of the pie. Is this dude for real??

What about the real sticking point--the issue of digital revenues? "There's nothing to give," Eisner says, "It's just too early." Eisner blames the studios--for boasting about how big their digital business is, so the writers want a piece of the action. Eisner says the writers should really be striking Apple in Cupertino, since Steve Jobs, not the studios, is the one making money on digital distribution.

Yeah but its the studios who hopped in bed with Jobs, and they are getting their cut as well. Jobs is just the delivery man, delivering what the greedy studios ordered.

It turns out Disney doesn't have a no homos policy, well at least not anymore

Published: Monday, April 09, 2007

The folks at Disneyland seem to now have a change of heart regarding their Fairy Tale Wedding program and who can participate. The program was for heterosexual couples only which had many people puzzled being that a lot of the money Disneyland makes is from the pockets of gay men and women. -NEIL

"We believe this change is consistent with Disney's long-standing policy of welcoming every guest in an inclusive environment," Disney Parks and Resorts spokesman Donn Walker said Friday. "We want everyone who comes to celebrate a special occasion at Disney to feel welcome and respected."

Groups not affiliated with Disney have held annual "gay days" celebrations at Disney parks for years. Company officials have taken a tolerant attitude to the weekend, allowing party promoters to rent out parks after hours and rebuffing religious groups that condemned Disney.

Apparently the folks at Forbes didn't think America's leading media companies like Time Warner, Disney, News Corp and Viacom were trustworthy enough to make their list. Instead the list is saturated with companies we've never heard of and some that were some how placed under the wrong industry category. We kinda understand why Newscorp wouldn't make the list but Playboy over Disney? We're sure there are reasons though.
Entercom, Hearst-Argyle, Playboy and Washington Post are on the list of the 100 American companies that show the highest degree of "fair dealing to stakeholders," according to Audit Integrity, an independent Los Angeles firm that does research on corporate governance best practice.

Disney's fake Inquiry on Pixar Grants finds that Steve Jobs did no wrong

Published: Saturday, March 17, 2007

Disney called off the prop dogs after their face saving investigation cleared Apple boss Steve Jobs of any misconduct in issuing backdated stock options at Pixar. Its a good thing too because had they found that Mr. Jobs was riding dirty, it would be a huge black eye for the entertainment giant and its biggest shareholder.

A brief statement by John E. Pepper Jr., Disney’s chairman, did not mention Mr. Jobs by name. But the statement said that “while options were backdated at Pixar prior to the acquisition, no one currently associated” with Disney was involved in “any intentional or deliberate acts of misconduct.”

Mr. Jobs, the former chairman and chief executive of Pixar, is now a Disney director and the media company’s largest shareholder, after Disney paid more than $8 billion last year for Pixar.

If you're gay and want to enjoy that fairytale wedding you've been dreaming of, go for it, but don't do it at Disney. Apparently Disney has no love for same gender love even of gays spend as much as or more money than straight people at the parks.
According to Disney spokesperson Jason DiPietre gay and lesbian couples are not allowed to participate in Disney's Fairy Tale Weddings and Honeymoon packages, citing that a valid Florida marriage license is necessary.

When asked why Disney, a private corporation, insisted it needs a valid marriage license to offer wedding services, DiPietre responded that what "makes the marriage binding and recognized by the state [of Florida] is the license, so that is why we need the license."

Disney's first brown princess "Maddy" probably has old Walt turning in his grave, and narrow minded white folks pissed

Published: Wednesday, March 14, 2007

-Shomari Hines

The Walt Disney Company finally realized that they should probably create a character that little brown children can relate to. After all brown parents contribute a huge chunk of the billions of dollars Disney rakes in every year. But why now? Why didn't this happen under the Eisner regime. Since taking over as Disney head mouse Bob Iger has been taking the company into new directions and one of these is making sure that brown people know that Disney has love for them too, or something to that effect. Disney's first brown princess will make her debut in the new Disney animation titled “The Frog Princess” which is currently in production.

“The Frog Princess,” a musical scored by composer Randy Newman, is “an American fairy tale” starring a girl named Maddy who lives in the French Quarter in New Orleans, said John Lasseter, chief creative director for Disney and Pixar Animation Studios.

However some narrow minded brown folks would probably ask why does the company have to debut their first black princess in a film called "The Frog Princess"? Or why did the film have to take place in New Orleans? But again, that would be narrow minded individuals who can't see past the fact that Disney has come out of the closet. But how will America respond to an animation film featuring a brown princess when they are used to only Caucasian princesses? Will Disney do some kind of tie in with black cable networks like TV One and BET? It would make sense wouldn't it, or would it? Only time will reveal how America feels about a brown princess, (and there are many in the world), when the film hits theaters in 2009. Disney should also make sure that it’s first brown princess has the features to match. Don’t try to get one over on the brown folks by darkening the skin of a white princess. Ya dig!

Disney one-ups Liz Spiers with mommy help website

Published: Tuesday, March 13, 2007

Disney will roll out a new website aimed at mommies who would rather get help advice from the Internet than their own moms. We can bet this will be on the blogroll of Liz Spiers' rumored mommy help blog when and if it ever launches.

By contrast, the new site is a one-stop site for parents, especially mothers, providing everything from Internet search to user-generated articles on key topics such as education and food, and, eventually, a "ParentPedia," a compilation of information on 1,000 topics that can be expanded by users. The site, to be announced Tuesday in Los Angeles, will go live later this week at http://www.family.com/ and remain in beta, or testing, stages until the summer, said Paul Yanover, executive vice president of Disney Online, a unit of the Walt Disney Internet Group.
Disney hopes to make money from selling advertising and from sponsored search, text ads that appear next to search results.
