The mood inside Time Inc may be one of uncertainty and anxiousness due to the soon to be finalized takeover of the company by Iowa based Meredith Corp. But Time Inc’s brass believes this merger is the best thing for Iconic brands like People, Time, Sports Illustrated and many others. Take for example Chief Content Officer Alan Murray. During the Fortune Global Forum in Guangzhou, China, Mr. Murray made some major points to latch on to. He said that
Time Inc.’s acquisition by Meredith is key to boosting its digital business, offering it a fighting chance against “giant tech monsters” like Facebook and Google
Its no secret that many media companies big and small have been revamping their approach and even joining forces to take on the so-called ‘Duopoly” that is Facebook and Google. However that fight may get even harder as the “Duopoly” is rapidly turning into a ‘Triopoly” with Amazon commanding more and more digital ad dollars. Another major point Mr. Murray made about the benefits of being acquired by Meredith is one that cannot be ignored. He said:
The important thing to realize about this merger is that, when you put the two companies together, we become the sixth largest digital media operation in the United States — 174 million unique visitors to our sites.
This is big, though this number will shrink as Meredith is expected to offload some non core brands from its newly expanded portfolio. It is believed that Meredith will look to unload titles like Time, Sports Illustrated, Fortune and some others after it closes on the deal.
