Unions are a bad thing in the eyes of many media bosses. One of those bosses apparently is billionaire Joe Ricketts who just a week after his journalist at two websites he controls DNAinfo and Gothamist voted to unionize, he shuttered the websites. His decision caught his staffers off guard prompting screaming from some when they saw his out of the blue email about his decision to close the sites. When his staffers voted to unionize, Mr. Ricketts reportedly refused to recognize the union. The decision by Mr. Ricketts to shutter DNAinfo, Gothamist and its spin off sites has suddenly put 115 people out of work. Ricketts has never been a fan of unions and once said they were corrosive.
“I believe unions promote a corrosive us-against-them dynamic that destroys the esprit de corps businesses need to succeed. And that corrosive dynamic makes no sense in my mind where an entrepreneur is staking his capital on a business that is providing jobs and promoting innovation.”
