Last week with much fanfare Conde Nast announced that it was launching a new media brand focused on pop culture, politics etc through the lens of the LGBTQ community. The launch which officially happens on October 26 will be Conde’s first new launch in about a decade. But so far the announcement has been met with a mix of welcome and mockery, not because of what the new media property is about but for its name “Them”. Apparently its giving some a “That One” vibe. Remember when John McCain in the 2008 campaign referred to Barrack Obama as “That One”? Well yeah, some folks on social media are not felling it. Them is the brainchild of Teen Vogue digital editor Phillip Picardi who said that ‘Them’ will showcase the voices and perspectives of people in the LGBTQ community. But some are calling the choice of name shortsighted and pejorative, inane and embarrassing. Hey at least we are all still talking about Them which we’re sure Phillip Picardi and his bosses will welcome.
