Its not just legacy publishers like Time Inc and Rodale exploring a sale. Digital publishers like 12 year old Mashable is also testing the sale waters. The company has hired bankers to explore strategic options including a partial our outright sale of the company. Sound familiar? Rodale issued a similar statement and has already taken bids from potential suitors for the company. Interests in Mashable is expected to come from here in the US and overseas in Europe. CNN came close to buying the company a few years ago and could possibly take another run but that scenario is not seen as likely being that CNN’s parent company TimeWarner is itself in the process of being inhaled by AT&T.
Mashable needs cash to support its foray into producing video, a more costly endeavor than the written journalism that marked the company’s earlier years. Mashable is producing short-form shows for Facebook, Bravo and others, and is collaborating with Time Warner’s Turner Broadcasting. The company can earn more money from advertisers for video.
