FOLLOWING MASSIVE CUTS TO ITS WORKFORCE, ESPN PULLS THE PLUG ON GRANTLAND
THE WEBSITE WAS NO LONGER RELEVANT TO ESPN'S BROADER STRATEGY
Depending on who you ask, the demise of Grantland began when the site's founder Bill Simmons departed from ESPN. After Bill Simmons exited, the company was at the time still committed to the website installing Chris Connelly in the interim to lead the charge. But since that move, ESPN, leading up to and after the firing of 300+ people, felt that the site was no longer relevant to its broader strategy and so they announced today in a short blog posting that they were suspending publication of the website saying:
