Flip Flopping Bertelsmann flips again

Published: Friday, September 28, 2007

First they merged their music business with Japan's Sony Corp, and then there was word that they wanted to sell their 50% stake in the company, and then they said they are sticking with the music business. Then they slaughtered a chunk of their Book marketing employees, and then merged it into their CD & DVD marketing business Columbia House. Then they took that and dumped it into its book publishing unit Random House. But before that, about a year ago they sold their music publishing unit to Universal Music, and now guess what? The media company that holds the platinum medal for most undecided is now looking to spend money to get back into the music publishing business.
The appeal of music publishing to Bertelsmann managers is that it generates a more stable revenue stream than music recording, the newspaper said. Music publishers manage recording artists' copyrights and charge advertisers, television and radio stations for using their songs. BMG Music Publishing was sold primarily to reduce debt, the newspaper said. Bertelsmann, owner of broadcaster RTL Group and publisher Gruner + Jahr, will not be able to start operations at the new unit before 2009 as it agreed with Universal to stay out of the business until that time as part of the sale of BMG Music Publishing.
Wow! Didn’t these so called managers know that before they sold out to Universal? You know what Bertie.... you make it too easy. Hopefully when Hart takes over he can get things in order. God knows Bertie needs it. Wonder how long until they sell Random House and then start another book publishing/marketing business?

I am with Sony BMG on the BMG side and I have to say, that even this merger is still a fucking mess. They just have wrong people in power

They are getting desperate for a big winner as their properties begin to approach the mature stage of their product life cycle.

The clubs are old and returning inadequate returns on sales. This use to be their cornerstone and was easy cash flow.

RTL is profitable, but has cost them dearly by having to borrow. Look back on older PL's and you will not see the heavy borrowing that you see now.

Random House does not look poised to grow. They can't keep raising prices.

They had some big winners in the Middlehoff era with the interent. but that is now over.

Look for them to violently veer left and right as they search to find something that will keep them fat and happy. So far it looks like they have lost a few pounds.

after nearly 5 years at bookspan (and "surviving" the first round of layoffs when bmg/ch took over), i resigned because the overall morale was so bad throughout the gc office. it seems that i made the right decision. what the hell is going on over there?! what is bertelsmann doing? does anyone know?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:26 AM) :

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:16 AM) :

Speaking as somebody who was released from the hell-hole that was GC and witnessed first hand the arrogance displayed by the people who believed that they were the 'lucky ones', I have absolutely no sympathy for the crying and complaining from those that are left about how horrible the company is to work for.

For the last year, the company has gone downhill fast, and anybody who was oblivious to that, or believed that they were 'too valuable' are sadly deluded. I'm sure that they were the ones that were told by the phonies who walked around GC how important they were and that they needed to be a part of the 'team'! Ha ha ha!

The entire organization has no moral dignity, has no consideration for loyalty and are directionally clueless.

Anybody working for Bookspan / DGNA / Random House, (or whatever they are calling themselves this week) should have had their resumes out about six months ago!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:34 PM) :

It's probably time to update the resumes, A.S.A.P.!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:19 AM) :

Hey you guys with the new company things may get better maybe we will have a chance to keep our jobs now. Now we have a new name which is Direct Brand Inc it only can get better lol.
