Talking Back: Addressing comments made by possible subjects of a previous item

Published: Tuesday, April 17, 2007

-LENN HINDSMANN

From time to time we have to respond to comments submitted by readers who are sometimes misled by our point of view or the delivery of it. Sometimes some of our readers may see something we posted as cruel and unwanted. Sure we can get nasty, but we in no way would go against the little people, at least not if we don’t have to. In this case we are addressing two comments submitted by what we think were from Bookspan employees regarding two items on our site. Below are the comments posted and our response to each of them.
COMMENTER: Lumping Bookspan Employees in with the "Losers" is unusually cruel. You do realize that Bookspan Employees are people who have children...people who have to put food on the table...people with mortgages or rent and bills to pay...people who have health-care concerns, who cannot afford to lose their coverage...people who are caring for elderly or ill family members...? To callously (and, indeed, almost jovially) list Bookspan Employees among this week's "Losers" is disgustingly low, in my opinion.

CONTINUED...

While we do understand that the current situation at your company is nothing to joke about, we still have to pull together our weekly list of the week’s Winners Losers and Idiots. Unfortunately because of said situation you being part of the media industry landed you on our losers section of this list. Being part of the losers list doesn’t mean you are “losers”, but you are losers in the sense that you’ve lost or you are about to lose. However we don’t take the things you mentioned above lightly. They are serious concerns that anyone who isn’t sure if they will have a job tomorrow would have. So to you we say no heart feelings just business, and don’t be shocked if and when you do land on our losers list again this week.
COMMENTER: I truly do not understand your insistence on referring to this as a "blood bath," based on one former employee's entirely inappropriate use of the phrase. And thank you so much for your kind "advice." It warms the very cockles of my heart to know that you, "Len Hindsmann" (whoever you are), are looking out for the lil' folks. Honestly, I am just so thankful for the fact that you have not seized upon this opportunity to poke fun at the Bookspan employees. You are the definition of a true humanitarian, Len Hindsmann. I salute you.

Well thank you for the salute friend. But you’re mistaken if you think we are basing our following of this unfolding story on that one individual we spoke of before. We keep our sources in the upper echelons of the food chain and by that we mean, the mother ship. See the funny thing is when you work for the company that is part of a bigger organization, you tend to get the cosmetic version (if you will) of the whole situation from your manager and/or director which is always the case. But when you don’t work for the company and you have sources within the mother ship, you get info, not even your manager and/or director are privy to. OK so it was premature to label the situation a blood bath because it hasn’t taken place as yet, and who knows if it even will. In no way do we make fun of people’s jobs possibly being on the line, unless we really hate em, we just write about it our way that’s all. On that note, our sources just told us that Markus Wilhelm’s parking spot is officially up for grabs.

We welcome and value feed back from our readers, but just know that when you submit a comment we may “Talk Back” because well, some comments just call for it.

Clearly your sources suck since you have no real media news to report other than Bookspan's "bloodbath." Perhaps you should get a new "mothership" and leave the media gossiping to Gawker.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:34 AM) :

And--if your source was so fabulous, you would have known that Markus' spot was reassigned on Friday.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:50 AM) :

I would like to "talk back," if I may. First off, my dear Mr. Hindsmann (or may I call you Len?), I would like to point out that you should employ the use of a proofreader and/or copyeditor before you post any of your witty and clever retorts on your site. Reread what you wrote. I'm sure a few of your glaring grammatical and/or spelling errors will certainly jump out at you a second time around.

And then, this: "...but you are losers in the sense that...you are about to lose." Interesting. Psychic, are we? Perhaps your next list should be more aptly entitled "Winners, Losers, About-to-Be-Losers, and Idiots."

It seems to me, dear Len, that you are so eager for a story--and indeed, so eager to infuse your own, shall we say, "interesting" brand of humor--that you have jumped the gun on more than one occasion:

First, the "blood bath." While your sources reach far beyond one disgruntled employee, your continued use of the words "blood bath" is from one source, and one source alone (the aforementioned "disgruntled employee"). And, in light of the recent shootings at Virginia Tech, I think the phrase "blood bath," even in reference to corporate firings, should be stricken from all future references to Bertelsmann.

Second, placing people who are "about to lose" on a list of "losers" was a hasty rush to judgment, at best.

Are these bookspan employees leaving long winded comments on company time?? Funny!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:01 AM) :

Hey Len....

Is this guy for real?

you have to be making this up.

Nobody is that dumb.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:52 PM) :

that's right - all SVP parking spaces are up for grabs! "first come, first serve"

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:52 PM) :

The guy who wrote this long winded reply is a jerk. He must work for goldfarb.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:14 PM) :

One of the new honchos told staff that the bigger honchos would be making a decision about what to do with them, the building, and the business in the next sixty days. There has been no "bloodbath" at all—just the laying off of the grossly overpaid, out-of-touch previous regime. More senior managers are leaving soon. One can only hope that Goldfarb & Co. doesn't keep the corrupt, soulless VP who once made her staff balance soda bottles and pumpkins on their heads and race each other around the office in a ridiculous competition she claimed was designed to build morale.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:27 AM) :

Working for Bookspan sucks to say the least.

And Goldfarb is a bigger jerk and his sucklings bigger yet.

To the sucklings reading this, look at your noses. They are getting longer!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:53 PM) :

Another day and two more ofmy friends were let go.

When is my day?

goldfarb - didn't you say at the Marriot that there would be no layoffs?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:56 PM) :

Liar!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:57 PM) :

What departments are getting the brunt of this right now?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:16 PM) :

Were we all at the same meeting at the Marriot? Because I truly don't remember him saying there would be no layoffs. Actually, I thought he said that when they did happen, we'd be treated respectfully. You can question the respect part, but he didn't lie about saying there'd be no layoffs.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:08 PM) :

Ding dong, the witch is gone. Too bad we won't be around to gloat about it. Rumour has it the massive layoffs will happen by the end of this month. In the meantime, good riddance evil witch (hint: her initials are Susan M.)At least Goldfarb did one thing right.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:08 AM) :

More to follow on this stuff

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:09 AM) :

How many VP's are there left?

Seems that they are getting knocked off one at a time.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:14 AM) :

What departments are you guys talking about?!
